Sankara Nethralaya is a world renowned not-for-profit tertiary eye care institution in Chennai, South India.

As part of its commitment to teaching and training, DEPARTMENT OF ORBIT, OCULOPLASTY, RECONSTRUCTIVE & AESTHETIC SERVICES welcomes doctors for observership from around the world.

Program Outline

Observers will have the opportunity to observe the consultants in action, examine patients, attend surgical operations, and attend the institute’s academic sessions in the form of meetings and classes.

Observers would be exposed to various diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in eye care. They would participate in discussions in diagnosing the ailments and with the permission of patients, they could examine them. They would be allowed to observe surgeries in the operation theater.

The department involves a variety of sub-specialties. They range from routine Eye Outpatient Services, Optometry work ups, Ocular prosthetic clinic, ophthalmic diagnostics (USG, VEP, ERG), Radiology services (CT/MRI in VRR scans), surgical theatres, and support services (IT dept). Vision Research Foundation has research laboratory facilities in the areas of Pathology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology.

Observers may choose to spend time in any of the sub-specialties depending on their interest.

Opportunities

1. Participation in patient care.
2. Observing various aspects of oculoplasty including management.
3. Participation in Academic and teaching activities.
4. Participation in research activities.
5. Observing and assisting various orbital, oculoplasty, reconstructive and aesthetic procedures

This will include exposure to eyelid malpositions, lacrimal disease, orbital disease, trauma (eyelid, orbital and facial), neoplasms (eyelid, orbital and facial), Graves’ disease, and aesthetic procedures.

Specific areas where the observer can expect to witness, but are not limited to, the following:

  Eyelid surgery
  Ptosis repair (all types)
  Eyelid malpositions (ectropion, entropion, etc.)
  Upper and lower blepharoplasty
  Tumor excision and reconstruction
  Trauma repair
  Retraction repair
  Skin and tissue grafts
  Congenital conditions
   
  Lacrimal surgery
  Probe and irrigate
  Silicone stents
  Balloon dacryocystoplasty
  Dacryocystorhinostomy (external and endoscopic)
  Lacrimal Trauma repair
   
  Orbital surgery
  Biopsy
  Orbitotomy (all approaches)
  Tumor removal
  Orbital decompression
  Orbital Trauma repair ( fractures, orbital foreign bodies, etc.)
   
  Anophthalmos
  Enucleation
  Evisceration

  Fornix reconstruction
