General Ophthalmology fellowship
Goals :

1. To become a competent general ophthalmologist, able to do medical ophthalmology in the following specific areas

a. Excellent refraction skills, ability to do keratometry, lensometry and biometry
b. Diagnosis and Medical management of glaucoma
c. Correct refractive errors, administer amblyopia therapy and know which strabismus patients to refer to pediatric ophthalmology
d. Diagnose and follow Diabetic retinopathy, and refer for laser when necessary. Able to pick up retinal breaks and conditions needing specialized retinal care
e. First line management of uveitis, ordering and interpretation of tests, and competent in indications for referral
f. Management of ophthalmic emergencies
g. Competent at reading visual fields, CT, MRI.

2. Good working knowledge of Interal Medicine

3. Surgical skills: ( including ability to deal with complications of the following surgery)

a. Cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation including ECCE, SICS, Phacoemulsification
b. Chalazion, small lid lesions
c. Pterygium
d. Dacrycystorhinostomy
e. Lid lacerations, anterior segment trauma

4. Procedure skills

a. Yag laser capsulotomy
b. Peripheral Iridotomy
c. Traumatic injury repair including lid lacerations
d. Panretinal photocoagulation and barrage laser

5. Management skills

a. Patient communication
b. Ethics
c. Office management skills

6. Teaching and education

a. Monthly seminars, and case presentations
b. One research paper per year of fellowship
c. Supervise residents in surgery
d. Maintain logbook

Sample :

First year :

Month 1 : Orientation

Month 2 : Vitreoretina/ Medical Retina

Month 3 : Cornea

Month 4 : Glaucoma

Month 5 : JCOC

Month 6 : Emergency

Second Half can comprise of specialities not covered in first half like Oculoplasty, Squint Neurophthalmology, and Diagonstics, JCOC

Second Year :

Choice of two specialities to concentrate on for three months each

Last six months : Independent consultation
