Fellowship Details

General Ophthalmology Fellowship (Duration – 18 Months)

Goals:
1. To become a competent general ophthalmologist, able to do medical ophthalmology in the following specific areas
Excellent refraction skills; ability to do keratometry, lensometry and biometry
Diagnosis and Medical management of glaucoma
Correct refractive errors, administer amblyopia therapy and know which strabismus patients to refer to pediatric ophthalmology
Diagnose and follow diabetic retinopathy, and refer for laser when necessary. Able to pick up retinal breaks and conditions needing specialized retinal care
First line management of uveitis, ordering and interpretation of tests, and competent in indications for referral
Understand the basics in diagnosis and management of disorders of eyelids, adnexa and Orbit.
To learn the complete evaluation of neuro-ophthalmic conditions and to recognise when to refer.

Management of ophthalmic emergencies

Competent at reading visual fields, CT, MRI and other ocular diagnostic tools.
2. Good working knowledge of Internal Medicine
3. Surgical skills: ( including ability to deal with complications of the following surgery)
Cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation including ECCE, SICS, Phacoemulsification
Chalazion, small lid lesions
Pterygium
Dacrycystorhinostomy
Lid lacerations, anterior segment trauma
4. Procedure skills
Yag laser capsulotomy
Peripheral Iridotomy
Traumatic injury repair including lid lacerations
Panretinal photocoagulation and barrage laser
5. Management skills
Patient communication
Ethics
Office management skills
6. Teaching and education
Monthly seminars, and case presentations
One research paper per year of fellowship
Supervise residents in surgery
Maintain logbook
