Sankara Nethralaya – ORBIS Paediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship ORBIS

Sankara Nethralaya ORBIS Paediatric Ophthalmology Training Centre

Paediatric ophthalmology was established in Sankara Nethralaya in 1979, with an annual in take of 496 patients and a single consultant.

Today, more than 10,000 visually disabled children are examined annually by five full time consultants. A large numbers of these child patients are from different parts of India and other countries.

Dr. T. S. Surendran who heads the department has a vast experience of over 24 years in this field. Dr Sujata Guha, Dr. Sumita Agarkar, Dr. N Kavitha Kalaivani and Dr. S Meenakshi are the Paediatric department faculties. Ancillary and support services for paediatric patients include, an active contact lens department, orthoptics, low vision service, and an exclusive ocular prosthetic service that is able to offer custom fitting for its patients. The department also works closely with the ophthalmic genetics and social services in offering counseling to the parents of many paediatric patients.

The department has trained 104 short and long term fellows who practice in several parts of the country.

The department has reached a very important milestone with the signing of a MoU with ORBIS. ORBIS supporting the department in the establishment of a paediatric Ophthalmology Training centre. The project helped with infrastructure improvement and establishment of a child friendly environment. Through this training centre 81 Optometrists, Nurses and Anesthetists have been trained in paediatric care.

Fellowship Details

Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship (Duration – 1 year)

Clinical Responsibilities

The fellows are expected to have clinical analyses and surgical skills in paediatric patient care. The fellow is supervised in the clinical and surgical evaluation of patients and participates in surgery. The fellow is trained in the appropriate evaluation of various disorders, like history taking, clinical examination, Orthoptics evaluation, Low vision Aids of both children and adults with strabismus. He/she is expected to gain experience in various paediatric ophthalmology outpatient procedures etc.

Surgery

The fellows will have opportunity to assist and perform various surgical procedures like Pediatric Cataract and Squint and exposure to ptosis, ROP, and probing.

Educational Responsibilities

The fellows will attend all educational conferences offered by Sankara Nethralaya. There will be academic meeting weekly ones. He/she is should give Journal presentation, present interesting and difficult cases for discussion in these meetings. He/she will have to keep himself/herself updated about the newer developments in the field by reading all the latest journals that are available in our library, and present interesting articles in the weekly departmental meetings. The fellows should maintain a logbook which will be evaluated by the academic director

1. Candidates who have passed DO/DNB/MS in Ophthalmology are eligible for Ophthalmology Fellowship.
