"Shri Bhagwan Mahavir vitreoretinal services" is one of the largest, busiest and best-equipped retina units in South East Asia . It is known in India and neighboring countries for its world class and state of the art eye care for the patients with complicated vitreo-retinal problems. It is situated on the seventh floor of Mahyco block, Sankara Nethralaya, 18, College Road Chennai. It is headed by Dr. Tarun Sharma and constitutes 17 well-trained, professional, full time consultants. On an average, 5666 patients are seen every month in out patient department. The facilities available in OPD are-

Eight fully equipped operation theaters are dedicated exclusively for vitreo-retinal surgeries and on an average 500 retinal surgeries, both simple and complicated, are performed every month. Apart from patient care, Shri Bhagwan Mahavir vitreoretinal services is also actively involved in teaching, training and research. The department offers both research (2 ½ years) and clinical (2 years) fellowships in VR disorders and basic (1 month) and advanced (1 year) fellowship in Medical retina. Till date around 226 candidates have been trained and over all 160 papers are published in peer-reviewed National & International journals.

TYPES OF VITREORETINAL FELLOWSHIP
Vitreoretinal Fellowship
There are 2 types of Fellowship programs, admissions to which are conducted twice a year (April and October).
Research-cum-clinical Vitreoretinal Fellowship
Four seats are offered as Research-cum-clinical Fellowships every 6-months in which the selected candidates spend six months in the various ongoing retrospective and prospective research projects and trials conducted by our institute. Following this, the Fellow starts the Clinical Fellowship
Clinical Vitreoretinal Fellowship
Four to five seats are offered as Clinical Fellowship every 6-months, which spans a duration of 2 years. Fellows have periodical rotations in the various Vitreoretinal disciplines, including uvea and diagnostics
Uvea and Medical Retina Fellowship
Duration 18 months
Number of trainees- 1 per year
Features
Training the use of basic diagnostic equipments such as slit lamp biomicroscopy with use of 78D and other contact and noncontact fundus lenses and indirect ophthalmoscopy.
Interpretation of and hands on training in performing Fundus fluorescence angiography (FFA) and Indocyanine Green angiography (ICG) using digital imaging system, ultrasonography, UBM, electro diagnostics (ERG) and OCT.
Exposure to medical retina cases
Training to perform laser photocoagulation
Participation in research activity
Medical Retina and Uvea postings along with a month of hands on surgical posting for cataract surgery during the first year. 6 months of senior residency with independent OPD postings and handling Uvea emergency and a month of cataract surgery training.
Selection
Advertisements will appear in the hospital website, in house magazines. Interviews will be held once in 6 months to select candidates for that period. Postgraduates with fresh qualification in ophthalmology, institutional candidates will be given preference.
Eligibility
Qualified candidates employed elsewhere should produce a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from the employer at the time of the interview.
