Vidyasagar Institute of Biomedical Technology
and Science (VIBS)

(a unit of Medical Research Foundation)

A sound knowledge and good skill, in Medical Laboratory Technology is a stepping-stone to the opportunities in the health care industry including in its Research and Development division. It can also be a dive board to plunge into Research in the leading Institutions and Universities in various Science and Technology Projects in life sciences.

With this aim, the Masters (MS) programme in Medical Laboratory Technology is conducted by Medical Research Foundation, in collaboration with the reputed University, BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan at the Vidyasagar Institute of Biomedical Technology and Science (VIBS) in the premises of Sankara Nethralaya.

Mr. Iravatham Mahadevan who is a Founder and Chairman of Educational Trust established in memory of his elder son, late Vidyasagar, has kindly come forward with a munificent donation to establish an institution to promote Biomedical Technology and Science as a unit of Medical Research Foundation (MRF) at Sankara Nethralaya in the year 2006. This has been designated as VIBS. This Institute is established to promote and foster biomedical technology and science related to basic medical sciences including fundamental research in this area.

The present ongoing postgraduates programme included under VIBS is the Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology conducted by Medical Research Foundation as the Collaborative programme of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani.

Other Educational Activities of VIBS

• One month Hands-on training programme for postgraduate students in Biological sciences studying in other colleges during May-June (summer holidays) are conducted on several biomedical technologies, specially designed and organized for candidates who do not have practical training in their own institutions during their study period.

•  The summer Practical School I (PS-I) programme for BITS, Pilani students for two months: Training is provided every summer from middle of May till June second week in three Basic Medical sciences departments (Molecular biology & Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology).

•  Short term Research Projects for PG students in Biological Sciences (3 -4 months in the month of December every year)

•  Specific Training programmes on specialized Techniques such as PCR/RT-PCR; HPLC etc.
