Drooping of the upper eyelid (ptosis) is a common problem dealt by this Department. If the lid droop is very severe especially in young children, it can even lead to lazy eye (amblyopia). Hence correction of the condition is essential for functional and cosmetic improvement.

Orbit is the bony cavity enclosing the eye. The orbit can be the seat of tumors that cause protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis). The lacrimal system drains tears into the nose and could be the site of chronic infection (dacryocystitis).

These and several other diseases are managed by a group of dedicated full time Consultants. Around 1400 surgeries are performed every year in this Department.

The Department also offers a two-year Fellowship Programme for Ophthalmic Post-Graduates.

Facilities
The Department is ably supported by a well-equipped Ocular Pathology Department.

Endoscopy
- Cases of dacryosystitis and other allied surgeries can be tackled through nasal route by means of endoscope. The advantage is that an external scar is avoided.

An ENT surgeon is also attached as a visiting Consultant.

Orbitotomy
- Surgical treatment for orbital tumors.

Socket Reconstruction
- Surgical restoration of deformed sockets to improve cosmetic appearance.

Ocular prosthetics
- There are two full-time skilled Ocularists to make customized artificial eyeshells to rehabilitate patients who have lost an eye due to various reasons.
