Awards
Ms. S Uthra worked on her PhD title - Diabetic Retinopathy: Genetic Association Studies of Candidate Genes in a South Indian Population-Based Cohort in the Sankara Nethralaya Diabetic Retinopathy Epidemiology and Molecular Genetics Study. On April 4 Friday she cleared her viva-voce at BITS, Pilani and was awarded the PhD degree and declared as 'Dr. S Uthra'.

UVETIS UPDATE MEET on 20-04-08 
Meet on Uveitis update "What's new in uveitis management?" was held at Hotel Residency Tower on 20 th April 2008 7.00 pm along with Madras City Ophthalmological Association. About 130 participants attended the meeting. In addition to the faculty of Sankara Nethralaya from Uvea department Dr. S. Ramakrishnan, Rheumatologist, Apollo Hospital , Dr. K. Jagannath, Pulmonologist and Dr. Eddy Agnlade from LUX Biosciences participated in the meeting. Sankara Nethralaya – ORBIS - Lions club of Temple bay community vision centre Inauguration on 27-04-08

Sankara Nethralaya – ORBIS Pediatric ophthalmology Learning and Training centre has inaugurated a Community vision centre at Muttukkadu in collaboration with the Lions club of Temple Bay . The inauguration was held on 27 th April '08, at 10.30 am. The District Governor of Lions Club PMJF Lion Govindaswamy Thangaraj inaugurated the renovated Medical Centre Building . Dr. T S Surendran, Vice Chaiman of Sankara Nethralaya Opened the Sankara Nethralaya – ORBIS – Lions club Community Vision Centre. Dr. Lingam Gopal & Dr. T S Surendran were honored by Lions club of Temple Bay . PMJF Ln Govindasamy praised the activities of Sankara Nethralaya in the field of Ophthalmology as well he mentioned the service of Dr. S S Badrinath for the rural population. The General Manager of Sankara Nethralaya Ms. Akila Ganesan, Consultants of Pediatric Ophthalmology Department of Sankara Nethralaya and President of Lions club Ln. Vinay Tibrewal, Ln. M S Jayaraman, Ln. G V Raman and other Lions club members and Sankara Nethralaya employees attended the function.

Orientation Programme on 01-04-08

A warm welcome was extended to the new batch of ophthalmologist pursuing their fellowship program by the family of Sankara Nethralaya on 1 st of April 2008. This batch included Fellows from Germany , Afghanistan and Malaysia . Dr T S Surendran, Vice-Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya welcomed the gathering and briefed on Nethralaya's History. Dr S Meenakshi, Director Academics gave an outline on the orientation programme. The fellows were taken on a hospital tour. They visited the wards, OT, Library and the communication department. Their duties and responsibilities were informed by Mrs Latha Vincent, Manager Academics. Patients' interaction and admissions were explained by Ms Shyamala and team. The function of MRD department, MRD coding and EMR was given by Mr Thiagaraj Thomas, Medical records Officer.
The afternoon session started with an important lecture about eye donation by Mr Irungovel, Manager Medical Sociology followed by video demonstration of enucleation procedure. Dr Doreen Gracias delivered a lecture on clinical lab and its functions. The fellows were allotted accommodation by Mrs Revathi Krishnan, Manager Housekeeping after which the fellows were taken on a tour to the JKCN complex and JCOC block. In the evening all the new Fellows met and interacted with PGs, Fellows and faculty Over high tea.
DNB Revision Course 24-04-08 to 30-04-08

A 7 day revision course was held at Sankara Nethralaya for candidates appearing for the DNB (Diplomate of National Board) examinations from 24 th April '08 to 30 th April 08. A total of 18 candidates from different institutions from across the country registered for the course. The participants were students appearing for theory and practical examinations due to be held later this year. The course included didactic lectures, interactive sessions, demonstrations, clinics in various sub specialties of ophthalmology. The faculty included consultants and fellows from various departments of Sankara Nethralaya. A mock examination which included a viva and OSCE were also held. The candidates were assessed and counseled on the concluding day. The course was conducted successfully due to the combined efforts of our faculty, multimedia department and housekeeping department
Organizational Changes
Mr Rathinam , DGM Technical has taken over as the Head of Tele-ophthalmology & Multimedia. Mr A P Irungovel , Manager Medical Sociology will be in-charge of running the Tele-Ophthalmology in addition to the eye-bank activities that he is currently handling & Dr Gandhi Rashmin Anilkumar has been nominated as Director- E-Learning. Mr Jothi Balaji has taken over as Manager – E-learning
