The Project - Need for Expansion of Infrastructure

Sankara Nethralaya has today grown into one of the largest Ophthalmic Hospitals in the world. Each core department of Sankara Nethralaya Patient Care, Community Ophthalmology, Research and Education has grown exponentially over the last decade. The Physical Infrastructure needs to grow parallel to this tremendous growth of the organization. The need of the hour for the organization is therefore a new building that will house some of the existing departments and allow adequate space for future projects. As a dynamic organization, Sankara Nethralaya, is looking at next generation research avenues like Stem Cell Research and Nanotechnology. Such projects, which will lead to India-centric research benefiting our fellow-citizens, need space to be established and to develop. The existing facilities at the hospital premises are inadequate to allow for such expansion of the organization. It is with this requirement in mind that the Management of Sankara Nethralaya has decided to take a pro-active step and initiate expansion of the physical infrastructure today.

The new building of Sankara Nethralaya will be established at the Main Campus of the hospital, 18, College Road, Chennai - 600 006. The oldest building in the premises a single storey building - has been demolished to make way for the new building.

"Congratulations on your pioneering effort to bring high level of vision research to India: - Dr. Carl Kupfer, Director, National Eye Institute, USA.

Today India is increasingly being seen as the hub for Clinical and Basic Research Activities. Sankara Nethralaya has a well established tradition of Research Activities in Genetics, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pathology. What makes research at Sanakara Nethralaya stand out is that the projects undertaken are India-Centric serving the needs of our fellow citizens. The need is to take up advanced research projects that would provide breakthrough in Ophthalmology and place India on the map of Ophthalmology research. With this objective in mind, Sankara Nethralaya would like to embark on cutting edge research in various fields and also adopt new technology for its outreach and training programs.
