Advanced Cataract Fellowship Programme

Programme Details:

Comprehensive SICS and phacoemulsification Cataract Training Program

Objective: To enhance candidates skill in Advanced Cataract Microsurgical Techniques

Duration: 2 Months

No. of Batches per year: 3 Batches (Feb-March, April-May, June-July)

No. of Candidates: Up to 10 candidates can be selected to undergo training in this programme

Outline: All Candidates will have hands on training and will perform around 8 -10 manual SICS & 12 - 15 phacoemulsification surgeries during their 2 month tenure. All surgeries will be done under scrubbed - in, one to one supervision by a consultant of Sankara Nethralaya

Parallelly they have:

  1. Interactive lectures by Consultants.
  2. Observing the senior surgeons perform surgeries.
  3. Wet lab training on animal eyes.
  4. Enhanced training on the virtual reality module.
  5. Augmentation of OPD skills e.g., Gonioscopy and Indirect Ophthalmology,biometry.

Accommodation: Residential accommodation will be provided at nominal cost to those who are selected subject to availability. While allotting accommodation, preference will be given to out station candidates.

During the 2- months period candidates are not allowed to take any leave/exams.

Stipend: Candidates admitted to the course shall be eligible for a stipend of Rs.5200.00 p.m

Selection is purely on merit: The applicants undergo a multiple choice question test related to Cataract surgery and ophthalmic basics. Our senior faculty shall then interview shortlisted candidates. Usually results are announced the same evening.

Educational Qualification: Ophthalmology PG Degree in MD, MS, DNB or DO recognized by the Medical Council of India, New Delhi

Candidates employed elsewhere should produce a No Objection Certificate from the employer at the time of interview and have the relevant certificates in the original.
