Uvea fellowship programme

Goals and responsibilities:

Primary goal of uvea fellowship is to develop diagnostic skills and therapeutic skills in caring for patients with intraocular inflammation and to develop an information base in basic ocular immunology, with associated research skills, to facilitate appropriate total care of patients with intraocular inflammation.

1. To give scientific and logical training to help trainees diagnose and treat intraocular inflammations

2. To provide proper exposure to all kind of common and rare uveitis which will help them in their future practice.

3. To make them able to manage all kinds of uveitis conditions independently and confidently.

Duration & commencement of program: 18 Months Program commences in January and July every year

Minimum qualifications: MS / DO / DNB in Ophthalmology

Age Limit: Upto 40 years

Stipend: *Rs. 55,000/- per month (*subject to change)

Application procedure: Same as for other fellowship programs

Requirements:

1. 1.Interest in Ocular inflammation /Uveitis/Immunology
2. A sound knowledge of internal medicine is desirable.
3. Capability to do indirect ophthalmoscopy
4. Willingness to participate in research activities/ projects

Selection procedure:

Through interview in UVEA specialty, after qualifying in the written examination which is common for all the anterior segment fellowship programs

Clinical exposure:

In initial months, fellows will be given rotational postings in Medical Retina and diagnostics. In subsequent months of training, a thorough exposure in clinical examination and diagnosis of anterior, intermediate and posterior, pan uveitis, scleritis and retinal vasculitis will be given

Features:

  • Mastering the skills of using slit lamp biomicroscopy,
  • Mastering the skills of using indirect ophthalmoscopy
  • Diagnosis and management of various retinal conditions related to posterior segment inflammation under supervision of a Uveitis specialist.
  • Diagnosis and management of uveitis and uvea emergencies under supervision of uvea specialist.
  • Management of HIV/AIDS related uveitis
  • Understand the use of immunosuppressive agents in Uveitis
  • Emergency Room posting for a period of 1 month to understand and deal with emergencies involving all ophthalmic sub-specialties
  • Interpretation of fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), Indocyanine green angiography (ICG), Optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCTA, ultrasonography (USG) and electrodiagnostic modalities related to uveitis and intraocular inflammations.
  • Hands on experience in performing FFA, ICG, OCT, USG and electrodiagnostic modalities during the diagnostic postings.
  • Weekly case and journal presentations at the uvea department meetings and classes
  • Last six months of senior residency with independent OPD posting, managing Uvea emergencies. The Uvea fellows will work as senior resident and manage uveitic cases independently.
  • They will also gain some exposure to ocular pathology in pathology lab during their fellowship.

Specific Clinical goals of Uvea fellow ship are

  • Diagnosis, differential diagnosis, evaluation and management of uveitis includes -anterior, intermediate, posterior and panuveitis vasculitis, scleritis and retinitis.
  • Differential diagnosis and formulation of diagnostic strategy
  • Selection and interpretation of laboratory investigations as well as ancillary investigations like fundus fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, ultrasonography, ultrasound biomicroscopy, Ocular coherance tomography CT scan and MRI.

Surgical exposure:

Fellows will be given sufficient opportunities for minor invasive procedures like posterior sub tenon injections, Diagnostic anterior chamber tap and intra vitreal injections. They will get enough chance to learn cataract surgery. They will be properly trained by experts to perform cataract operation (Extra capsular, small incision, Phaco emulsification) independently. Fellows will be given opportunity to observe and give proper pre and post-operative treatment for complicated cataracts under expert supervision of consultants. They may get an opportunity to operate on complicated cases too at the discretion of HOD .

Research possibilities:

Uvea fellows will get chance to work on various clinical and basic science projects under senior consultants. They will get enough guidelines and opportunities to work for publications in various journals. They will be encouraged to attend national conferences and uveitis workshops with guided presentations. Several basic science and clinical examinations will be conducted throughout the year and preparation for scientific presentations and for publications are required for satisfactory completion of the fellowship. Additional educational obligations include weekly attendance in uvea meet to present interesting cases to attend uvea grand rounds, uvea quiz, Journal club & CME programme and PG class and to contribute your ideas and participation in state, national and other conferences.

Medical retina and Uvea combined fellowship

Duration:24 months (1st year Uvea + 2nd year Medical retina)

Number of trainees:2 per year (one every 6 months)

Age Limit:Up to 40 years

Goals and Features:

  • Mastering the skills of using slit lamp biomicroscopy,
  • Mastering the skills of using indirect ophthalmoscopy
  • Diagnosis of various medical and surgical retina conditions under supervision of retina specialist.
  • Diagnosis of various ocular tumors and their management.
  • Diagnosis of uveitis and uvea emergencies under supervision of uvea specialist.
  • Interpretation of fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), Indocyanine green angiography (ICG), Optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCTA, ultrasonography (USG) and electrodiagnostic modalities.
  • Hands on experience in performing FFA, ICG, OCT, USG and electrodiagnostic modalities.
  • Visiting NICU with retina specialist to screen babies for retinopathy of prematurity.
  • Hands on experience in performing lasers for ROP babies under supervision,
  • Experience in cataract surgeries once a week during their first year and in the last month month of the fellowship program.
  • Hands on experience in performing laser photocoagulation and delivering intravitreal injections for various posterior segment pathologies.
  • Emergency Room posting for a period of 1 month to understand and deal with emergencies involving all ophthalmic sub-specialties
  • Familiarize with the art of prescribing low visual aids, genetic screening and counseling
  • Total of 5 months of senior residency (2 months of Uvea during 1st year & 3 months’ medical retina during 2nd year) with independent OPD posting, Uvea emergencies, laser and ultrasound postings.
  • Cataract surgeries in the last month of the fellowship program.
  • Taking part in research and presentation in conferences.
