Goals:

This fellowship aims to equip ophthalmologists with advanced clinical, surgical, and research expertise in Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Neuro-Ophthalmology, enabling them to deliver high-quality patient care, contribute to academic teaching, and engage meaningfully in research.

About the Program:

The Fellowship at Sankara Nethralaya offers structured, systematic clinical exposure across all major ophthalmic subspecialties, followed by focused, advanced training in the dynamic discipline of Neuro-Ophthalmology. Training is supported by distinguished faculty members who provide both academic guidance and mentorship.

Clinical Training

First Year – Comprehensive Ophthalmology Rotations:

Fellows undergo a broad-based rotation across emergency services, cornea, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, uvea, and retina clinics.

  • Community Ophthalmology Posting (3 months): Intensive cataract surgery training including extracapsular cataract extraction, small incision cataract surgery, and phacoemulsification.
  • Additional exposure to ocular trauma management during on-call duties.

Second Year – Neuro-Ophthalmology Specialization:

Dedicated rotations in Neuro-Ophthalmology, managing complex referral cases from across the country.

  • One-on-one postings with senior neuro-ophthalmologists.
  • Cross-disciplinary exposure to neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology through collaborative teaching by senior faculty from affiliated reputed institutions.

Final 3 Months – Senior Residency:

Fellows function as independent clinicians, running outpatient clinics under the supervision of an on-site faculty preceptor.

  • Direct patient care, follow-up, and case reviews are emphasized to ensure readiness for independent practice as a comprehensive and confident neuro-ophthalmologist.

Research Training: Academic Activities

  • Structured lecture series, grand rounds, journal clubs, and fortnightly departmental case discussions.
  • Fellows actively present and moderate academic sessions under faculty supervision.

Research Opportunities

  • Involvement in in-house research projects and training in scientific writing, including preparation of papers and case reports.
  • Guidance in study design, data analysis, and publication.
  • Opportunities to present at national and international conferences, with institutional sponsorship for accepted research papers or posters.
