Indications of contact lenses:

People go in for contact lenses for cosmetic reasons and optical reasons to avoid glasses or change the colour of their eyes.
In some pathological conditions as only contact lenses can give them the best vision.

Some subjects prefer contact lenses for occupational reasons like professional artists, professionals requiring to use microscopes, photographers etc.

Optical Indications

Most contact lens wearers fall into this group. The great majority are Myopic or hyperopic with or without astigmatism.

Anisometropia and Unilateral Aphakia

Anisometropia exists when there is a difference in the refraction of generally more than two diopters between the two eyes. In the adult, differences of greater than three diopters generally are not tolerated with spectacle correction. In such cases, a contact lens may be indicated in order to reduce the development of amblyopia and anisometropic aniseikonia.

Pediatric Contact Lenses

Infants and children with eye conditions that would normally require them to wear bulky eyeglasses with conditions such as high prescriptions; anisometropia (significantly different prescription between the two eyes), aphakia (an eye where the lens has been removed) and other focusing problems need to wear constant visual correction for the visual system to develop normally.

When a child needs vision correction but where one is never prescribed or worn, amblyopia, or "lazy eye", can develop and vision can be reduced permanently.

Since eyeglasses are never tolerated well by small children, contact lenses are the preferred method of vision correction for these patients.

Bifocal Contact Lenses

Whether you are nearsighted, farsighted or even if you do not need any visual correction, you will likely need the help of reading glasses when you reach your 40's. This is called Presbyopia. The lenses used to correct this refractive error is called Bifaocal contact lens.

Keratoconus (KC)
Keratoconus is a thinning disorder of the cornea that causes distortion and reduced vision.

Pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD)
A condition whereby the lower cornea becomes thinner and the optic surface of the cornea becomes irregular and the vision becomes blurry.

Laser and Lasik refractive surgery may result in residual refractive error. In the event that they can not be corrected with further procedures, fitting with contact lenses may be required. These conditions special contact lens is required for fitting

Corneal irregularity resulting from Ocular injury, disease, infection or surgery including those who have had corneal transplant surgery, radial keratotomy surgery or those with corneal scarring and irregularities from injury or corneal disease experiencing poor vision from the visual distortions

Corneal ectasia is a condition where the cornea begins to protrude after being thinned too much from refractive surgery.

X-Chrome Contact lenses

Color blindness or color vision deficiency is the inability to perceive differences between some of the colors that others can distinguish. It is most often of genetic nature, but may also occur because of eye, nerve, or brain damage, or exposure to certain chemicals. The X chrome contact lenses help to perceive difference in some of the colours by increasing the contrast.
